For most hernia repairs the open technique is best described as making an incision over the hernia and repairing the abdominal wall defect.

This method is preferable mainly for very large incisional hernial defects and may also require full reconstruction with an abdominoplasty. The repair will require the use of mesh for reinforcement otherwise the recurrence risk will be very high and your Surgeon will explain the relative risks of surgery such as bowel and abdominal organ complications that can occur, but are rare, when they see in you in clinic.
