A barium meal is similar to a barium swallow, the difference being that the examinations looks at your small bowel. For this reason the test may take a little longer (45minutes) to get all the necessary X-rays. You may have some delayed X-rays (2-4 hours later) to make sure the contrast has passed all the way through.
